The UK Government is doing more to encourage people to switch to electric vehicles. For one they are offering grants for people who want to install EV charging points in their homes. This will help to improve the infrastructure so more people can move away from petrol and diesel. If you are thinking about making the switch, you should have a look at OLEV grant funding and see if you are eligible.
What is the OLEV Grant?
The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has its Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS). With it people can claim up to £500 to cover up to 75% of the cost of buying and then installing a home charging point for electric vehicles.
OLEV Grant Eligible
The main requirement to be eligible for the EVHS is that you must have bought a qualifying hybrid or electric car since 1st October 2016. If you made the switch sooner, you cannot apply.
In addition you must have off-street parking, purchase OLEV-approved equipment, and use an approved installer. If you are ordering a new electric or hybrid car, you cannot arrange installation more than four months before delivery of the vehicle or registration.
As well as above you must have a vehicle that qualifies for the EVHS. It must be an ultra-low emission vehicle. If you have a full battery electric car you will be able to apply for the grant. However, only certain plug-in hybrids qualify. They must have carbon emissions below 75g/km. A full list of the hybrids that are eligible is available on the Gov.uk website.
The EVHS is available to drivers in Scotland but they can also claim an additional £300 thanks to the Energy Saving Trust. This makes it even more beneficial to switch to an electric or hybrid car.
